Tawawa House Piano Vocal Score & Libretto
Tawawa House: A Musical Drama in Two Acts. Words and Music by Zenobia Powell Perry. Reconstructed and edited by Jeannie Gayle Pool. This bold and controversial opera tells the compelling and truly American story of an Ohio resort hotel that served, before the Civil War, as a vacation spot for white slave owners and their Black mistresses and children. Tawawa House became a stop on the Underground Railroad and, eventually, the first African American-owned and -managed university, Wilberforce University.
The opera features solo and choral voices, orchestra, and dancers. In May 2014, the Townsend Opera Company (now Opera Modesto) gave a fully-staged performance at the Gallo Center for the Performing Arts; a concert version was presented in October 2019 at the Presidio Chapel in San Francisco.
