Notes by the composer:
“Composed in 1978, the Variations on a Theme of Valerie Capers is a large work for piano that uses as the theme Ella Scats The Little Lamb from Dr. Capers’ collection of intermediate piano pieces Portraits In Jazz, followed by seven variations. The Suite is made up of excerpts from this work: Variations I, V, VI, and VII (Finale). It is also noted that though this was originally composed for one pianist, this work was arranged for piano four hands by Josephine Gandolfi.”
